From RBR.com November, 3, 2011... At 8 p.m. ET, “Up All Night” (1.8/6 in adults 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) is up 38 percent versus the 1.3 rating NBC averaged in this time period last season ("live plus same day," non-sports), despite intense time-period competition that included Fox's "X Factor," CBS's "Survivor" and ABC's "The Middle." Versus NBC's 18-49 rating in the half-hour on the same night last year, "Up All Night" is up by 38 percent (1.8 vs. 1.3).
* Note that "Up All Night" has been adding 47 percent to these next-day "live plus same day" ratings when Nielsen issues "live plus seven day" results so far this season, the biggest percentage increase for any comedy or any new series on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox and second biggest for any primetime series on those networks.
While this show has performed somewhat below average, NBC has picked up a full season fore o "Up All Night." It's my opinion that NBC is using the bigger numbers from "live + 7" to calculate this shows future. This "live + 7" trend also helps advertisers of products like Ford trucks, or Huggies. These products are not what I call "time sensitive." Obviously, you would be less willing to buy ad time for the McRib for this show. McRib is a limited time offer, but the F150 and Huggies aren't.
This same line of reasoning is also why I feel that the tide of the "talent" and "game" shows are ebbing. It is true that many new sitcoms were launched this season, but the new hour long dramas Terra Nova, Once Upon A Time, and Grimm are performing quite well too.
Which makes me wonder...WHY is NBC bringing back "Fear Factor?"
Fear Factor is one of those shows that no matter how lame it may look or feel, people will watch because Americans like to watch people do stupid things for money.
ReplyDeleteI think Fear Factor would be a great comeback. I'd watch.
I agree with Josh...as long as the things that the contestants do are truly more extreme than what they used to do, they might be able to reel people in. Obviously we do not know what kind of things the contestants will be doing until the show premieres, but I think people will tune in to see what they might have come up with
ReplyDeleteLive + 7 should help sitcoms a lot since many people aren't able to watch live on primetime evenings, but still manage to find time to catch up later in the week or on weekends. I often do so myself for my favorite shows, and since sitcoms do not age like reality shows the extended ratings should still be acceptable to advertisers.
ReplyDeleteI did not like Fear Factor before, and I will not watch a new one. I agree with Steve. I record all my tv shows and I watch them later in the week. A lot of people record the show and then watch it later that night just to skip the commercials.
